Therearesomepeoplewhoseemtomovethroughlifelikeshadows,theirpresencefeltbutneverquiteseen.Theyaretheoneswholeaveamarkonourhearts,butnotourmemories.Andyet,thereissomethingaboutthemthatlingers,afeelingthattheyholdsecretswewillneverknow.Thisisataleaboutonesuchperson,whoseenigmaticfigurehauntsthepagesofthisstory.Shewalkeddownthestreetwithanairofmysterysurroundingher,herbackturnedtotheworldasifhidingsomethingfromview.Herslenderframewasdrapedinalongcoatthatbillowedinthebreeze,andherhairwastuckedupunderawide-brimmedhat.Shewaslikeashadow,slippingsilentlythroughthecrowdswithouteverreallybeingnoticed.Nooneknewhernameorwhereshecamefrom,buteveryonehadseenheratsomepointoranother.Somesaidshewasaspy,othersclaimedshewasaghost,andtherewereevenrumorsthatshewasatimetraveler.Butnooneknewforsure,andsheseemedtopreferitthatway.
Peoplewouldoftencatchglimpsesofherinthedistance,orseeherslipintoalleywayswhenshethoughtnoonewaswatching.Andyet,despiteherelusivenature,therewassomethingaboutherthatdrewpeoplein.Perhapsitwasthemysterythatsurroundedher,ormaybeitwasthewayshemovedwithsuchgraceandfluidity.Oneday,amanspottedherwalkingalongtheriverbank,andhecouldn'tresistfollowingher.Hetrailedherforwhatfeltlikehours,watchingassheweavedthroughthestreetswitheffortlessease.Itwasasifshehadasixthsensefordanger,alwaysknowingwheretoturnandhowtoavoidtrouble.Asthesunbegantoset,thewomanfinallycametoastopinfrontofanoldbookshop.Themanwatchedfromadistanceasshedisappearedinside,wonderingwhatcouldhavepossiblydrawnherthere.Hewaitedforawhile,butshenevercameout.Finally,hedecidedtofollowherleadandgoinsidehimself.Thebookshopwasmustyanddimlylit,filledwithshelvesuponshelvesofdustyoldtomes.Themanlookedaround,tryingtospotthewomaninthecrowd,butshewasnowheretobefound.Asheturnedtoleave,ahandgrabbedhisarmfrombehind,andhewhirledaroundtofacethemysteriousfigure.
